Port This list specifies the port used by the server process as its contact port. For the purpose of providing services to unknown callers, a service contact port is defined. Ports are used in the TCP to name the ends of logical connections which carry long term conversations. The following are a list of well-known and registered ports:Īccording to IANA "The Well Known Ports are assigned by the IANA and on most systems can only be used by system (or root) processes or by programs executed by privileged users. Some common port numbers are 80 for web (HTTP), 25 for email (SMTP), and 53 for Dmain Name System (DNS). Both TCP and UDP use ports to identify services. A port is just a number assigned to each application to identify that service on that computer. Since a computer might have multiple applications running on the same IP address, ports allow a computer to tell the differences from services such as email data from web data. Whereas IP makes two computers to communicate with each other across the Internet, TCP and UDP make the individual applications or services on those computers to communicate with to each other.
